There are a number of different ways to obtain a Green Card to become a permanent resident in the U.S.A.
A Green Card gives you certain rights and obligations, and with a Green Card, you can later apply to naturalize as a U.S. citizen.
- Participate in the Green Card lottery
- The United States’ Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery program awards up to 50,000 immigrant visas per year.
- Sponsoring for a Foreign Spouse, Future Spouse, or Relative
- Current U.S. citizens can sponsor
- A foreign spouse or fiancé(e)
- Their foreign children
- Immediate relatives such as parents or siblings
- Current U.S. permanent residents can sponsor
- A foreign spouse
- Unmarried children (irrespective of age)
- Current U.S. citizens can sponsor
- Refugees or asylees may, within the first two years or being granted such status, petition for certain other relatives to obtain refugee or asylee status
- U.S. military or their family members may petition for citizenship for family members
